Govt reassess policy for locomotives

The government plans to soon conduct a rail test to reassess the use of 20 percent-blended biodiesel in locomotives operated by state-owned railway operator PT KAI, following sporadic engine failures experienced by the company. The country started implementing the 20 percent biodiesel blending (B20) policy in transportation and industry sectors last year and planned to increase the blending to 30 percent in 2020, in an effort to slash its greenhouse gas output by 29 percent by 2030. However, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has provided relief for KAI by exempting the company from using the B20 biodiesel from May to October as such biofuel might not be compatible with the companys locomotive engines.
