The Paris Agreement 2016 marked a historic turning point for global climate action, as world leaders from 195 nations came to consent on an accord of commitments to combat climate change. Indonesia, as one of the countries involved, tries to implement various strategies, one of which is to gradually reduce fossil fuels use.

According to the data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahan Bakar Minyak (BBM) or oil fuel contributed to producing 164.31 million tons of CO2 in 2015 alone. This records the highest number compared to other energy types. We have to agree that this has a negative impact on our beloved environment. It is time to switch to more friendly renewable energy sources.

In terms of renewable energy sources, Indonesia has a great potential in producing renewable energy because of its abundant natural resources. Here are 5 things that make Indonesia worthy of becoming the center of renewable energy:

  1. 40% of the world’s geothermal energy

Indonesia ranks third in producing electrical energy from geothermal energy through Geothermal Power Plant (PLTPB).

  1. Abundant solar energy – 12 hours/day

Thanks to its strategic position on the equator, Indonesia is blessed with abundant solar energy which can certainly be used for Solar Power Plants (PLTS).

  1. Strong winds all year round

As an archipelagic country, another abundant renewable energy source is wind. This wind energy can be captured by the Wind Power Plant, then converted into electricity for public use.

  1. Ocean wave energy

Indonesia coastline shows a large potential of ocean wave energy to be developed into wave power.

  1. Hydroelectric power station

Renewable energy produced by hydroelectric power which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity.
