The Double Impact of Pertamina SAF: Turning Used Cooking Oil into Cash and Cutting Emissions by 84%!
PT Pertamina (Persero), through its development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), is proving that clean energy solutions can deliver a dual positive impact: driving a circular economy at the community level while significantly reducing environmental emissions in the aviation sector.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, emphasized that the development of Pertamina SAF fundamentally drives a circular economy by involving the public in the raw material supply chain.
A Circular Economy Starting in the Kitchen
The core of this SAF business model is the utilization of Used Cooking Oil (UCO). Pertamina has launched the UCollect initiative, a program that actively invites the public to become part of the clean energy ecosystem.
“The Pertamina SAF ecosystem will boost the circular economy because people can participate as suppliers for Used Cooking Oil feedstock,” said Fadjar.
Through this program, households now have a way to exchange their kitchen waste for added economic value. Pertamina has provided 35 UCollect Box collection points strategically located in cities including Jakarta, Tangerang, Depok, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Gresik, Bali, and Palembang. Detailed collection locations are available via the MyPertamina app, making it easier for citizens to participate.
Beyond households, Pertamina is also building collective partnerships with the commercial sector—such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes (HoReCa)—to collect UCO on a larger scale. This massive public participation is expected to drive a sustainable increase in eco-friendly jet fuel production.
SAF’s Tangible Contribution to Emission Reduction
The development of Pertamina SAF is a concrete commitment to climate action. SAF has been proven to potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84 percent compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuel.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso stressed that these emission reduction benefits are crucial in supporting Indonesia’s energy transition roadmap toward Net Zero Emission (NZE).
“Moving forward, Pertamina SAF production capacity will continue to be increased so that the ecosystem keeps growing and emission reduction targets can be accelerated,” Fadjar concluded.
As a leader in the energy transition, Pertamina consistently supports the NZE 2060 target. The company continues to drive programs with direct impacts on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aligning with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines. SAF from used cooking oil is living proof that environmental solutions can simultaneously provide economic solutions for the people.
