Dimulai dari penyediaan lapangan pekerjaan, perolehan devisa negara, pemanfaatan lahan kritis, sumber oksigen bagi kehidupan makhluk hidup, serta mampu menyerap emisi karbon dari udara. Seiring pertumbuhan perkebunan kelapa sawit di Indonesia yang makin pesat hingga mencapai 16,38 juta hektare, produksi dan proyeksi pasar industri sawit Indonesia juga makin menjanjikan. Indonesia sebagai negara produsen dan pengekspor minyak kelapa sawit terbesar di dunia tentunya memiliki angka produksi minyak kelapa sawit yang fantastis. Dalam proses pengolahan kelapa sawit menjadi berbagai macam produk turunan, sudah dipastikan akan meninggalkan residu yang dikenal dengan limbah sawit. Ya, kelapa sawit pun dalam pengolahannya menghasilkan limbah. Namun, limbah hasil pengolahan dari kelapa sawit ini mempunyai potensi untuk dapat dimaksimalkan jika dikelola dengan baik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limbah kelapa sawit dapat dimanfaatkan untuk keperluan perkebunan, perternakan, bahkan untuk energi terbarukan. Penggunaan energi terbarukan berbahan nabati seperti limbah sawit dapat dijadikan sebagai obat untuk meminimalisasi pencemaran lingkungan yang sebagian besar diakibatkan penggunaan bahan bakar fosil. Sudah saatnya kita beralih ke sumber energi yang dapat diperbaharui (renewable energy). Mengutip Palm Oil Indonesia, kebun sawit menghasilkan biomassa sawit berupa TKKS (tandan kosong kelapa sawit\/empty fruit bunch), cangkang dan serat buah (oil palm fibre and shell), batang kelapa sawit (oil palm trunk), dan pelepah kelapa sawit (oil palm fronds). Hasil studi Foo-Yuen Ng, et al (2011) menunjukan bahwa untuk setiap hektare kebun sawit dapat menghasilkan biomassa sekitar 16 ton bahan kering (dry matter)\/tahun. Peningkatan produksi minyak sawit juga sejalan dengan peningkatan produksi biomassa. Selain biomassa, kelapa sawit juga berpotensi untuk menghasilkan biogas (bio methane) melalui pemanfaatan limbah cair (palm oil mill effluent\/POME) yang dihasilkan PKS (Pabrik Kelapa Sawit). Biomassa sawit juga dapat diolah menjadi bioetanol (pengganti premium\/gasoline). Menurut KL Energy Corporation (2007), dalam setiap ton bahan kering biomassa dapat menghasilkan sekitar 150 liter etanol. Penggunaan biogas dan bioetanol yang dihasilkan dari limbah kelapa sawit tersebut akan dapat mengurangi konsumsi dan ketergantungan Indonesia terhadap bahan bakar fosil.
