Sayangnya, hingga saat ini, penggunaan energi baru terbarukan di Indonesia belum menjadi pilihan utama dalam memenuhi kebutuhan energi karena sebagian besar masyarakat masih memilih energi fosil sebagai pilihan utama. Padahal, biofuel merupakan bahan bakar terbarukan yang cukup menjanjikan karena dapat mengurangi emisi gas, meningkatkan ketahanan energi dan bahan mentahnya bisa kita temukan di sekeliling kita. Kulit kacang, misalnya.<\/p>\n<p>Siapa sangka kulit kacang yang selama ini kita buang bisa diubah menjadi sumber energi terbarukan? Inovasi ini dibuktikan oleh 4 mahasiswa UGM yang berhasil menemukan potensi sumber energi alternatif\u00a0saat melakukan penelitian di Laboratorium Kimia Fakultas MIPA.\u00a0Kulit kacang memiliki senyawa selulosa lebih tinggi daripada limbah lain, seperti bonggol jagung, jerami, serbuk kayu sengon, dan ampas tebu. Senyawa selulosa yang terdapat pada kulit kacang dapat mencapai 63,5% sehingga memiliki potensi yang cukup besar untuk dijadikan bioetanol sebagai sumber energi alternatif.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam proses pembuatan bioetanol,\u00a0kulit kacang digiling sehingga menjadi tepung. Lignin yang terdapat pada kacang dibersihkan dengan larutan NaOH agar mempercepat reaksi hidrolisis. Kulit kacang yang sudah dibersihkan kemudian melewati proses hidrolisis enzimatik sehingga menghasilkan senyawa glukosa. Senyawa glukosa inilah yang akan difermentasi dengan mikroorganisme untuk menghasilkan bioetanol.\u00a0Hasil penelitian ini, para mahasiswa menemukan bahwa 10 gram kulit kacang kering mampu menghasilkan 4\u00a0ml bioetanol.<\/p>\n<p>Berdasarkan data Badan Pusat Statistik,\u00a0rata-rata produksi kacang tanah kurang lebih 700.000 ton setiap tahunnya. Menurut perhitungan para mahasiswa ini, jika bobot kulit kacang kering sebesar 12-13\u00a0persen dari massa total kacang, maka ada sekitar 90.000 ton kulit kacang yang dapat dimanfaatkan menjadi bioetanol dan menghasilkan sekitar 36 juta liter bioetanol setiap tahunnya. Konversi energi menggunakan generator berbahan biofuel membutuhkan bahan bakar sekitar 3,5 liter\/kWh. Bayangkan, dengan\u00a0rata-rata pemakaian normal listrik 124 kWh\/rumah maka\u00a0jumlah produksi etanol dari kulit kacang\u00a0jika dilakukan secara maksimal\u00a0dapat menerangi sekitar 6.000 rumah setiap tahunnya.
