PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has reaffirmed its strong commitment to leading the green energy transition in Indonesia. This effort is being realized through the accelerated use of eco-friendly fuels, including biodiesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), as well as the development of other renewable energy sources.

This was expressed by Harsono Budi Santoso, Director of Business Planning & Development at Pertamina Patra Niaga, during the 2025 Green Energy Summit. He noted that Indonesia is on the right track to reducing its dependency on fossil fuels, with biodiesel serving as concrete proof of this progress.

Biodiesel and SAF: The Backbone of Future Green Energy

Harsono highlighted the central role of palm-based biodiesel in national energy independence. Indonesia has been running its biodiesel program since 2008 and has now reached B40 (a 40% biodiesel blend). “This is clear evidence that Indonesia is on the right path to curbing its reliance on fossil fuels,” Harsono asserted.

Furthermore, Pertamina is focusing on developing eco-friendly fuels for the aviation sector through SAF. This innovation is crucial given the current lack of electric aircraft for large-scale commercial flights. Pertamina’s SAF offers dual advantages:

  • Practicality: It can be used as a “drop-in” fuel without requiring modifications to aircraft engines or airport infrastructure.

  • Circular Economy: Pertamina’s SAF is based on Used Cooking Oil (UCO), effectively transforming waste into high-value energy while significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

Pertamina has already conducted certified SAF trials at the Cilacap Refinery and three major Indonesian airports. This step supports the government’s target to implement 1% SAF by 2027.

Biofuel Expansion and Green Infrastructure

Pertamina’s commitment extends across various products and internal operations:

  • Renewable Diesel: The development of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), also known as Pertamina Renewable Diesel.

  • Pertamax Green 95: Distribution of this ethanol-blended fuel (RON 95) has expanded to 150 gas stations (SPBU) across Indonesia, offering consumers lower-emission fuel options.

  • Internal Operations: Pertamina has begun implementing green energy at fuel terminals and Green Energy Station gas stations by utilizing solar power plants (PLTS).

Harsono emphasized that the energy transition is a “long journey” requiring support from all parties—ranging from technical sectors and the automotive industry to active consumer participation. Through collaboration, green energy is poised to become the backbone of national energy resilience.
