Pertamina energy transitions featured at B20 sustainability summit
State-owned energy company Pertamina continues to support Indonesia\’s energy transition through the development of technological innovations to decarbonize their operations and increase capacity from renewable sources. Some of these innovations were presented during the B20 Sustainability Summit in New Delhi on Aug. 23 and the Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) on Aug. 24 and 25. Pertamina Research and Technology Innovation Senior Vice President Oki Muraza explained at the B20 Sustainability Summit that Pertamina has been focusing on Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS/CCS) technology development, which captures CO2 emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. “Pertamina has taken the initiative to implement CCS or CCUS through CO2 injection technology, first applied at the Jatibarang Field in West Java. This technology could enhance oil and natural gas production through CO2-EOR while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Oki said at the B20 Sustainability Summit. Regarding renewables, meanwhile, Oki spoke about Pertamina\’s bio-refineries that can produce environmentally friendly fuels such as HVO (hy-drotreated vegetable oil), Green Gasoline, Green Diesel and Green AvturJ2. These refineries are also able to process derivatives and waste from other commodities such as Refined, Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO), which is a derivative of crude Palm Oil (CPO), and used cooking oil (UCO). The Pertamina Group has eight initiatives as part of their green transition strategy, in-eluding to expand the company\’s palm oil-based biofuels, to develop the biomass project to include biogas and bioeth-anol, to continue developing geothermal capacity, to utilize geothermal energy for green hydrogen generation and to increase collaborations with other state-owned enterprises (SOEs) such as Inalum, Antam and PLN to develop electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The other initiatives are to optimize gas utilization by developing and integrating gas infrastructure, to increase renewable energy in the national energy mix such as through the implementation of solar power plants and to continue utilizing the Circular Carbon Economy approach, such as the installation of CCUS or CCS technology. However, notable obstacles threaten the success of Pertamina\’s initiatives. Among them has been the continuous increase of global energy prices, which has diversely impacted Indonesia\’s energy transition by disrupting energy security and resilience. By design, energy transition initiatives require a certain level of energy resilience because the energy supply is affected for the duration of the transition. “So, we must strive to enhance our energy resilience while working to achieve sustainability goals. How can we reduce emissions and increase the volume of green energy businesses, environmentally friendly electricity and more,” explained Oki. Pertamina has been actively addressing this challenge by forging partnerships with international businesses. In one example, Pertamina\’s collaboration with Japan played a part in implementing CCUS through CO2 Injection technology in the Jatibarang Field and the Sukowati Field. This success shows that international cooperation can substantially support the nation- al energy transition effort. In the future, Pertamina hopes to further enhance and extend its collaborative initiatives. At the same event, Oki also spoke about another way to secure the national energy transition, namely community involvement through promoting, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). As a country where MSMEs contribute significantly to the national economy, Indonesia cannot exclude their participation in low-carbon energy development. As part of Pertamina\’s eight initiatives to decarbonize its operations and support renewable development, the state-owned energy company has also been supporting the MSMEs sector through programs such as Desa Energi Berdikari. In his presentation, Oki highlights that energy independence for MSMEs is important because they play a significant role in employment, underscoring their vital role in accelerating the energy transition. In the future, Pertamina hopes that the company\’s programs, which involve communities, generate employment opportunities, increase rural incomes and subsequently achieve a Nature-Based Solutions guided energy transition, can serve as an energy transition role model.

Terkait laju harga minyak dunia. Direktur Jenderal Minyak dan Gas Bumi Kementerian ESDM Turuka Ariadji mengemukakan, pihaknya terus memantau pergerakan harga. Prediksi harga minyak, menurut dia, tak melulu naik.
